Myth or Fact...

  • "If a doctor knows that I am an organ donor, they will not work as hard to save my life."  Myth

    • If you are admitted to the hospital, the doctor's first priority is your life! Organ donation is not considered until tests are run to determine a complete lack of brain activity.

  • "Only 10% of the global demand for organ donors is being met." FACT

  • "Celebrities and wealthy people go to the top of the list first, so they can get an organ faster." Myth

    • The organ transplant list determined based on medical necessity and illness severeity, along with time on the list and blood type; status and wealth have no determination on your placement on the list.

  • "I am too young/too old to be a donor." Myth

    • People of any age can be a donor, and people of all ages need transplants. Successful transplants have resulted from a 6 day old and a 92 year old, so don't let your age be the reason you do not register to save others! Tomorrow is not guaranteed, so NOW, regardless of your age, is the time to start thinking about becoming a donor.

  • The 2015 Superbowl hosted 63,400 fans. The National Transplant Waiting List holds 123,235 patients waiting on necessary organs; almost double the capacity of the University of Phoenix Stadium! FACT!

What Can Be Donated?

ONE donor can improve the lives of up to 50 people through donation of the following organs and tissues:

  • Heart

  • Lungs

  • Corneas

  • Kidneys

  • Pancreas

  • Liver

  • Intestines

  • Skin Grafts

  • Bone & Bone Marrow

  • Veins

  • Ligaments & Tendons

  • Cartilage

How does this affect my loved ones?

  • There is no charge to the donor's family for organ donation. Your family will have no additional bills or expenses related to your donated organs.

  • The procedure of harvesting organs for donation is done like any other surgical procedure; there is no disfigurement of the donor's body, and therefore an open casket funeral is still possible.
